Google Unveils New AI Smart Glasses to Compete with Meta After Earlier Google Glass Failure

Google officially launched its new smart glasses at the Google I/O developer conference, marking its return to the smart glasses market after the failure of Google Glass more than a decade ago.

Google's new model, called "Audio Glasses," features built-in microphones, cameras, and small speakers, allowing users to make phone calls, listen to music, take photos, and interact directly with the AI assistant Gemini.

Google's comeback is seen as a challenge to Meta, which currently dominates the smart glasses market with its Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, having sold at least 7 million units worldwide.

Google introduced two collections of glasses: one developed in collaboration with the U.S. eyewear brand Warby Parker, and another from the South Korean fashion brand Gentle Monster.

Technical development is handled by Samsung, and the glasses can connect to both Android smartphones and iPhones.

Previously, Google launched Google Glass in 2013, but the project was discontinued amid heavy criticism over privacy violations and covert recording of people.

This time, Google aims to address previous weaknesses by focusing on a fashion-forward design that closely resembles regular glasses to attract a broader consumer base.

Although Google has not yet announced an official release date or price, the company stated that the new smart glasses will be available within this year.

Additionally, Google revealed it is developing another version of smart glasses with a built-in display, similar to Meta's latest model launched in late 2025, which is currently undergoing further developer testing.
