Iran Threatens to Expand War Beyond Middle East If U.S. Strikes Again

Iran's military has warned that if the United States attacks their country again, the resulting war will expand beyond the Middle East region.

On 20 May 2026 GMT+7, Iran issued a warning that it would broaden the scope of the war beyond the Middle East if the U.S. launches another attack, following President Donald Trump's statement that he nearly ordered military action again within less than an hour.

It has been six weeks since Trump halted the "Epic Fury" operation to negotiate an end to the conflict with Iran, but so far, the talks have made no progress.

This week, Iran submitted a new proposal to the U.S., though the publicly revealed details remained the same conditions previously rejected by Trump, including demands for control over the Strait of Hormuz, war reparations, lifting sanctions, releasing frozen assets, and withdrawal of U.S. troops from the area.

On Monday and Tuesday, Trump reiterated that he almost ordered a new wave of bombings but stopped his decision at the last minute to allow more time for diplomacy.

"Today, I was only an hour away from making the command," Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday.

Previously, Iran repeatedly threatened to retaliate against any new attacks by striking U.S. bases located in the Middle East, and on Wednesday, Iran hinted it might target locations farther afield as well.

"If there is another aggression against Iran, the regional war that ensues this time will expand beyond this region," stated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in a statement released through government media.
