Trump Claims MOU Agreement Will Open Strait of Hormuz Iran Denies Not True

Donald Trump posted that the MOU negotiations with Iran are largely complete and will lead to the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, but Iran insists it will maintain control over the strait.

On 23 May 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that negotiations on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) regarding a peace agreement with Iran are “mostly complete” and will lead to the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, with details to be announced soon.

"Discussions are currently underway regarding the final aspects and details of the agreement, which will be announced shortly," Trump stated.

Trump posted this message after completing phone calls with leaders of various Muslim countries and speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Earlier on Saturday, Iran, the U.S., and Pakistan—which is acting as a mediator—all reported progress in negotiations to end the nearly three-month-long war.

However, Iran's Fars news agency reported on Sunday (24 May) local time that the Strait of Hormuz will remain under Iranian administration according to the latest documents exchanged between Iran and the U.S.

The Iranian news agency also rejected Trump’s claim that opening the strait is part of an agreement “mostly completed” in negotiations, calling the information “incomplete and inconsistent with reality.”
