Crack Found in Toxic Chemical Tank in California May Help Reduce Pressure After Evacuating Over 40,000 People

The latest update on the toxic chemical tank leak in Garden Grove, Orange County: officials have found a crack in the tank that may help relieve internal pressure and reduce the risk of a major explosion.

Previously, authorities ordered the evacuation of about 40,000 people from the area starting Friday after the chemical tank leaked, releasing vapors that covered the community located approximately 8 kilometers from Disneyland.

TJ McGovern, acting fire chief of Orange County, said officials approached the chemical tank on Saturday night to assess the situation and found a crack that might partially relieve the tank's internal pressure.

He stated that the information from this operation is a positive sign and helps officials better assess the situation, although it cannot yet be confirmed that the area is safe.

So far, the cause of the leak has not been disclosed, and officials have not confirmed whether the crack is related to the source of the incident.

Reports indicate the tank contains about 26,000 liters of Methyl Methacrylate, a flammable and volatile chemical used in plastic production.

Earlier, firefighters warned that the tank’s temperature was rising to dangerous levels, risking a severe explosion, necessitating continuous water cooling of the tank.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warned that this chemical can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory system, and may affect the nervous system if exposed to high amounts.

As of Sunday, evacuated residents have not been allowed to return, while shelters have been opened to support those affected.

Disneyland confirmed it remains open but is closely monitoring the situation.

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Orange County and urged residents to strictly follow evacuation orders.

The incident occurred at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, a plant that manufactures and tests parts for commercial and military aircraft. The company stated it is working with experts to resolve the situation promptly.
