Iranian President Orders Internet Connection Restored After Months of Shutdown

Iranian media revealed that the president has ordered the restoration of internet connectivity after it was nearly completely cut off since the US and Israel launched attacks in February.

On 25 May 2026 GMT+7, Fars News Agency, a semi-official Iranian outlet, reported citing sources from the Ministry of Information that President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered relevant agencies to restore internet access after it had been disconnected for several months.

Data from NetBlocks and other monitoring groups indicate that Iran began restricting internet access from late December 2025 following large anti-government protests initially sparked by soaring inflation, currency devaluation, and a worsening economic crisis.

The Tehran government intensified controls as protests expanded to calls for political change. By late February, amid military attacks by the US and Israel, Iran cut internet signals almost completely.

NetBlocks posted on the platform X last Monday that this internet shutdown lasted over 2,064 hours, resulting in "a total lack of transparency regarding executions" of dissenters. Additionally, imprisoned government critics faced "inhumane and uncertain daily living conditions."

However, the Fars report did not specify when the restoration order would take effect or which restrictions would be lifted.
