US Launches Attacks on Southern Iran Targets Citing Troop Protection Amid Fragile Ceasefire Agreement

The US military launched operations striking several targets in southern Iran, describing the actions as self-defense responses. The attacks focused on Iranian missile launch sites and vessels attempting to deploy naval mines in the area, amid a fragile ceasefire situation between the two sides.

On 26 May 2026, the US Central Command (CentCom) issued a statement saying the attack was conducted to protect US personnel from threats posed by Iranian forces. It emphasized that the US continues to exercise restraint while the ceasefire agreement remains in effect.

A CentCom spokesperson added that the US military maintains ongoing protective measures for its forces in the region, while also seeking to avoid escalation. This move occurred as Iran disclosed partial progress in negotiations with the US, though no imminent resolution to end the conflict is expected.

Over recent weeks, tensions in the Middle East have remained high following the war involving the US, Israel, and Iran, which has broadly impacted regional security and critical energy transit routes like the Strait of Hormuz. Despite efforts to promote dialogue and uphold the ceasefire, the latest attacks highlight that the risk of military confrontation between the US and Iran remains unresolved.
