Shock as Nearly 90 Drones Fall into Sydney Harbour During Light Festival After System Malfunction

An unexpected incident occurred during Australia's famous light festival when nearly 90 drones fell from the sky into Darling Harbour amid a spectacular light show, with many spectators close to the scene.

The incident happened during the annual Vivid Sydney festival, which showcases light and art installations citywide. On Monday night, spectators were stunned as numerous drones fell from the sky during the show, crashing into the water and nearby docks close to the audience.

Video footage from the scene showed many drones gradually descending from the air, causing confusion among viewers watching the performance below.

Skymagic, a UK-based company managing the drone show, revealed that the problem was caused by changes in radio frequency after the drones took off, which disrupted the positioning system and caused some drones to enter an automatic emergency landing mode.

The company stated that a total of 89 drones fell into Cockle Bay around Darling Harbour but confirmed that no drones fell outside the designated safety area.

Robert, a witness working near Darling Harbour, told ABC television that the drones hitting the ground were very loud; even from about 10 to 20 meters away, the sounds of impact and shattering were clearly heard.

The Vivid Sydney organizers issued an apology to attendees for the incident and announced the cancellation of two more drone shows as a standard safety measure.

Authorities and the event organizers will jointly conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause before deciding whether to proceed with the remaining drone performances.

The drone show, called 'Star-Bound,' involves up to 1,000 specialized drones flying in a 12-minute performance. It debuted last Sunday and was originally scheduled for 22 shows over 11 nights during the three-week festival.

The Vivid Sydney festival began in 2009 and is promoted as the largest festival of light, music, and food in the southern hemisphere. It features a 6.5-kilometer walking trail with over 43 light installations, including colorful projections on the Sydney Opera House, attracting tourists worldwide each year.
