Iranian authorities condemned the United States for a serious violation of the ceasefire after launching attacks in the country's southern region, and declared they will not allow this to pass without retaliation.
On 25 May 2026, Iran stated that the U.S. committed a “serious violation of the ceasefire agreement” following renewed U.S. airstrikes over the past 48 hours, while both sides were engaged in negotiations to reach a settlement to end the war that began on 28 February.
The U.S. Central Command, known as CENTCOM, reported that U.S. forces struck missile bases in southern Iran and targeted Iranian ships attempting to lay naval mines on Monday, describing the operation as a “self-defense strike.”
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the U.S. must bear responsibility for the consequences of its “aggressive and illegitimate actions” in Hormozgan Province, a coastal area adjacent to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy shipping route that Iran has blocked, causing global energy prices to surge.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran will certainly not let any malicious acts go unpunished and will not hesitate to defend the Iranian nation,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s statement said.
It remains unclear how the attack will affect the ongoing peace negotiations aimed at ending the conflict, but Brent crude oil prices jumped nearly 3% after the strike. China also called on both sides to respect the ceasefire agreement and resolve the dispute peacefully.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there is still a possibility of reaching an agreement through talks but it may “take another 2-3 days.”
