Trump Declares US Will Guard Strait of Hormuz, Warns Oman Against Intervention

Donald Trump confirmed that the United States will be the one to oversee the Strait of Hormuz, not Iran or Oman as Tehran has claimed, and added that there will be no easing of economic pressure until Iran complies with the agreement.

On 27 May 2026, US President Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz must be "open to everyone" and that the US will "watch over it." He added that these conditions are part of ongoing negotiations with Iran. Trump also warned Oman against interference, saying, "Otherwise, we will have to bomb them."

When asked if he would accept a short-term deal allowing Iran and Oman to control this vital shipping route, Trump replied, "No, this strait must be open for everyone to use."

"It is international waters. No one will control it. We will be the ones watching over it. We will watch over it ourselves, but no one will control it," Trump said. "That is part of the negotiations we are conducting."

Meanwhile, Iran has insisted that management of the strait does not involve the United States but will be coordinated jointly with Oman, according to statements by Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Monday. Other Iranian officials have reiterated this position as well.

Trump also issued an ultimatum regarding uranium and Iran's financial relief, stating he will not allow Russia or China to receive a share of Iran's high-enriched uranium. He insisted there will be no discussions about financial relief measures for Iran until it fully complies with its commitments.

These statements reflect a tougher stance on two key issues at the core of ongoing negotiations with Iran.

Earlier this week, Trump said he was open to the idea of having the uranium "destroyed right there or at another suitable location," but did not provide further details.

However, Trump appears unwilling to ease economic pressure on Iran, which Iran has sought as part of any agreement. On Wednesday, he said, "We are not talking about lifting sanctions or giving any money. No sanctions relief, no money, nothing."

"We are still holding the money they claim is theirs. We will keep control of that money, and only when they behave well and do the right thing will we allow them to have their money back. But for now, we will not do that," Trump emphasized.
