Pope Leo XIV helped a man who fainted while standing in line to shake hands with him after the general audience at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City amid a severe heatwave.
Footage showed Pope Leo XIV kneeling beside the man as Vatican officials hurried to administer first aid and help the pilgrim regain consciousness.
Afterward, the Pope returned to greet the crowd as usual, while Vatican staff wheeled the man away on a stretcher, shielding him from the intense sun with an umbrella.
This incident occurred as Vatican City and Rome faced a severe spring heatwave, with Rome authorities issuing their first-ever red alert of the year, the highest warning level.
Italy's Civil Protection Department stated that this alert level indicates soaring temperatures affecting not only the elderly and those with illnesses but also generally healthy individuals.
The Italian Air Force meteorological service forecasted temperatures in Rome could reach 32 degrees Celsius (about 89.6 degrees Fahrenheit), with many parts of Europe experiencing similar extreme heat.
