Five Rescued from Flooded Cave in Laos, Two Still Missing

Rescue teams in Laos have freed four more people trapped in a flooded cave after rescuing the first survivor on Friday, but two others remain missing.

On Saturday, 30 May 2026, rescue teams managed to bring out four more villagers trapped in a flooded cave in Laos, following the rescue of the first survivor on Friday. Now, only two missing persons remain unaccounted for despite the incident occurring 10 days ago.

A Malaysian rescue diver told AFP news agency that the four survivors were brought out after the team pumped water from the cave chamber, but he declined to comment or speculate about the condition of the two missing persons still unlocated.

The Facebook page Thailand Rescue Diver posted that “rescue teams were able to bring out four more trapped victims” around 15:10 on Saturday, adding, “In total, five people have been rescued so far, and two remain missing.”

Seven villagers entered a cave located in the remote mountainous area of Xaysomboun Province, central Laos, on 20 May, but heavy rain caused sudden flooding that blocked the cave's exit.

Rescue teams found the first five survivors last Wednesday (27 May), sheltering in a narrow passage about 300 meters from the cave entrance.

Two persons are still missing. Authorities are urgently pumping out water blocking the cave entrance. Survivors said the two missing men had walked about 500 meters deeper into the cave beyond their location, and their fate remains unknown.
