Japan Meteorological Agency Issues Warning for Strong Tropical Storm Jangmi with Heavy Rain and Strong Winds, Over 400 Flights Canceled

The powerful tropical storm "Jangmi" is moving northward toward southern Japan. Japan has warned Okinawa and the Amami Islands to prepare for heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves, with over 400 flights already canceled.

On 1 June 2026 GMT+7, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the strong tropical storm "Jangmi" is moving northward over the sea south of Japan and is expected to approach Okinawa and the Amami Islands by Tuesday amid warnings of heavy rain, strong gusts, and high waves.

According to reports, at 07:00 local time on Monday, the storm was located southeast of Miyakojima Island and moving north at about 15 kilometers per hour. Officials expect Okinawa and the Amami Islands to experience wind gusts up to 180 kilometers per hour, with accumulated rainfall reaching as much as 300 millimeters in the 24 hours through Tuesday morning.

Japanese authorities warned residents to watch for strong winds, high waves, storm surges, and landslides. The storm is expected to continue moving near Japan's west to east coasts until Wednesday, potentially causing heavy rain along the Pacific coast. On Amami Oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, fishermen have been securing their boats with ropes since Sunday to prepare for the severe weather.

Meanwhile, locals have begun stockpiling supplies at supermarkets more than usual. A woman told local media she is preparing lunches for her grandchildren and wants to avoid shortages of ingredients during the storm.

The storm’s impact has led airlines to cancel around 400 flights on Monday, mostly inbound and outbound from Okinawa, with some Tuesday flights also being canceled. Airlines have urged passengers to closely monitor the latest updates on their respective websites.
