
A powerful explosion occurred inside the plant of Hanwha Aerospace, a major South Korean arms manufacturer, as officials continue to work on controlling the fire and investigating the cause.
A severe explosion struck the factory of Hanwha Aerospace, a leading South Korean producer of weapons and aerospace technology, resulting in at least five deaths and two injuries, according to fire department officials.
The explosion happened at around 11:00 a.m. local time on Monday, 1 June, at the company's facility in Daejeon, located about 150 kilometers south of Seoul.
Officials from the Daejeon Fire Command confirmed five fatalities and two injured individuals but have not disclosed further details about the victims.
Yonhap News Agency reported, citing officials, that the blast occurred within the factory, while the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
Hanwha Aerospace is one of South Korea's key defense companies, engaged in manufacturing weapons, artillery systems, aerospace technology, and components used in the security industry.
The Daejeon plant serves as the company's main research and development center, focusing on advanced weapons technology and aerospace systems.
A representative from Hanwha Aerospace stated that the exact cause of the explosion and the full extent of the damage cannot yet be determined, as firefighters have not fully contained the blaze.
Meanwhile, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has ordered all relevant agencies to mobilize resources to swiftly control the situation and extinguish the fire.
