Netanyahu Vows to Continue Attacks in Southern Lebanon As Planned

Israeli leader Netanyahu confirmed that attacks on southern Lebanon will continue, but strikes on Beirut are postponed after Donald Trump announced that Israel will not deploy troops into Lebanon's capital.

On 1 June 2026, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Israeli military will continue attacking southern Lebanon "as planned," just hours after President Donald Trump declared that Israeli forces would not move into Beirut.

In a brief statement, Netanyahu said, "The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will continue operations in southern Lebanon as planned," adding that if Hezbollah continues to attack Israeli cities and civilians, Israel is ready to launch strikes on Beirut.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on the same day, "There is no ceasefire in Lebanon yet."

Earlier Monday morning, Katz and Prime Minister Netanyahu issued a joint statement ordering the Israeli military to begin striking Beirut. However, in an evening statement, both implicitly accepted Trump's ceasefire agreement and indicated that Israel would not immediately attack Beirut.

Katz gave an interview to Channel 14, a right-wing Israeli news outlet, emphasizing the same direction as Netanyahu that Israel will continue attacking southern Lebanon.

"We are continuing our operations — to destroy Hezbollah’s capabilities and remove all Hezbollah fighters from southern Lebanon," Katz said. "We will continue to counter every threat posed by Hezbollah."
