Powerful Tropical Storm Jangmi Hits Southern Japan, Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Disrupt Hundreds of Flights

Tropical Storm “Jangmi” struck southwestern Japan, resulting in nine injuries, power outages affecting nearly 50,000 households, and disruptions to more than 600 flights. Authorities have issued warnings to monitor flood and landslide risks due to the storm's impact.

On 2 June 2026 GMT+7, Tropical Storm "Jangmi" swept through southwestern Japan on Tuesday, causing at least nine injuries, leaving tens of thousands of homes without electricity, and leading to the cancellation of over 600 flights.

The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that Jangmi had weakened from a typhoon to a severe tropical storm but continued moving northward after passing Okinawa Island on Monday. The storm brought heavy rain, strong gusty winds, and high waves across many areas. Authorities warned residents to stay alert for flash floods, landslides, and storm surges, especially in coastal and hillside regions.

NHK reported that in Kagoshima Prefecture in the south, more than 30,000 households experienced power outages, while in Okinawa Prefecture over 17,000 households lost electricity. At least nine people were injured in Okinawa.

Minoru Kihara, spokesperson for the Japanese government, said public transportation systems in Tokyo and nearby cities might be affected on Wednesday as the storm approaches central Japan. He urged residents in vulnerable areas to closely follow local evacuation orders and prepare to evacuate in advance if necessary, advising everyone to exercise caution and adhere to safety instructions.

Major Japanese airlines, including All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines, announced cancellations of over 600 flights combined from Monday through Wednesday, significantly affecting passengers nationwide. Officials expect the storm to continue impacting several parts of Japan through midweek, particularly the Pacific coast, where heavy rain is likely to persist.
