NASA executives revealed that the New Glenn rocket launch pad exploded during an engine test, causing severe damage. The launch pad was heavily destroyed, and this is expected to affect space missions and Amazon's satellite projects aiming to compete with SpaceX.
Blue Origin's efforts to challenge SpaceX's dominance in the space business face a major setback after a powerful explosion during testing of the New Glenn rocket severely damaged the launch pad, which may require a lengthy repair period.
Jared Isaacman, an official from the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), told CNBC that the damage to Blue Origin's rocket launch pad was very severe and restoration could take considerable time. However, he noted that it remains possible for the pad to be fully operational again by 2028.
The unexpected incident occurred last Thursday while the New Glenn rocket was undergoing a Static Hot-Fire Test, a standard engine ignition test before orbital launch, at the U.S. Space Force launch site in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
However, the test ended in a massive explosion that produced a huge fireball engulfing the launch pad area, causing severe damage to the launch infrastructure.
This accident happened at a critical time for Blue Origin and Amazon's satellite project, managed by billionaire Jeff Bezos, who is striving to enhance competitiveness against Elon Musk's SpaceX, the global leader in commercial satellite launches and space transport.
Sources within the company and the space industry revealed that the blast caused near-total destruction of the rocket launch pad, necessitating extensive repairs.
Engineers' initial assessments indicate that repairs could disrupt Blue Origin’s operations for at least six months, possibly longer.
There have been no reports of injuries resulting from the incident.
Additionally, the satellites for Amazon’s space internet project, originally scheduled to be launched on this rocket, had not yet been mounted on the vehicle at the time of the accident, so they were unharmed.
The New Glenn rocket is named after John Glenn, the American astronaut who was the first U.S. citizen to orbit the Earth.
This rocket was originally intended to play a key role in transporting lunar landers, equipment, and supplies for NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to explore the Moon.
