Russia Launches Heaviest Attack on Ukraine in Months, Killing 21 Including Two Children

Russia launched drones and missiles in its largest attack on Ukraine in months, resulting in 21 deaths and hundreds wounded. Meanwhile, Ukraine sent drones to attack a Russian oil refinery, causing a fire.

Foreign news agencies reported that Russia's overnight missile and drone attacks into Tuesday, 2 Jun 2026 GMT+7, caused at least 21 deaths across Ukraine, including two children. This marks one of Moscow's largest offensives in recent months.

Ukrainian local officials revealed that 15 people died in the city of Dnipro, where rescue teams recently recovered the bodies of an 8-year-old boy and three women from the rubble of a residential building. In Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, six people have died.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia deployed 656 drones and fired 73 missiles of various types, including ballistic, cruise, and anti-ship missiles, during the overnight attack. The targets were civilian infrastructure and energy systems nationwide, injuring over 100 people.

The Kremlin government announced that Russia is conducting a “systematic offensive” as promised, following accusations that Ukraine was behind a student dormitory attack in the Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine, which Russia occupies. Ukraine claims it targeted Russian military units.

Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, told reporters, “This practice will continue,” claiming the attacks targeted Ukraine’s military infrastructure. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that all attacks successfully hit their intended targets.

Following the latest attack, Zelensky urgently called on the U.S. to supply missiles for the “Patriot” defense system due to severe shortages, after Donald Trump halted direct arms shipments to Ukraine, instead requiring Kyiv’s European allies to purchase and send the missiles.

Separately, Alexander Khinshtein, governor of Russia’s Kursk region in the west, revealed that Ukraine launched drone attacks on Monday evening (1 Jun), causing one death and a fire at an oil refinery in Krasnodar city in the southwest. The Ukrainian military acknowledged responsibility for both strikes.
