A bear rampaged and attacked people at factories and residential areas in Fukushima Prefecture, injuring four people, one of whom is in critical condition.

On Tuesday, 2 Jun 2026 GMT+7, police and local media reported that a bear attack injured four people. The incidents occurred inside two factories and a residential area in Fukushima Prefecture in northern Japan.

The Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, citing police and fire department sources, reported that the bear was first spotted at an automotive parts factory, where an employee was attacked, prompting an emergency call.

The report added that the bear continued rampaging, injuring two more people—one in a residential area and another at a nearby electronics equipment factory. The bear is believed to still be inside the factory.

One of the victims sustained serious injuries, while the others suffered only minor wounds.

In 2025, Japan recorded a historic high of 13 fatalities from bear attacks, and nationwide bear sightings surpassed 50,000, double the previous peak recorded two years earlier.

Local media reported that this year has again seen record bear sightings as bears emerge from winter hibernation. There have been reports of bears entering homes, wandering near schools, and causing disturbances almost daily in supermarkets and hot spring resorts.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, in April this year, one person died and five were injured from bear attacks. Additionally, there have been more than ten bear sightings in Tokyo’s suburbs, including a report of a Russian man in his 30s bitten by a bear while hiking within the city.
