
Japan is facing heavy rainfall from the powerful tropical storm Jangmi after it made landfall in Wakayama Prefecture and moved toward the Kanto and Tokai regions. Authorities have issued evacuation warnings for several areas due to risks of flooding and landslides, while Tokyo is closely monitoring multiple rivers overflowing their banks, causing high floods in many locations.
On 3 June 2026 GMT+7, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the strong tropical storm Jangmi continues to bring heavy rain to many parts of Japan, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides in several prefectures. The storm made landfall near Wakayama Prefecture at about 04:30 local time before moving toward the Kanto and Koshin regions. It is currently heading into the Kanto and Tokai regions.
Meanwhile, Japanese authorities have downgraded the emergency warning level from 5 to 2 for the Kosagawa River in Wakayama Prefecture as the situation begins to ease, but they continue to monitor it closely.
At the same time, the Izu area in Shizuoka Prefecture has been added to the list of regions affected by heavy rain clouds. Authorities have warned residents to be cautious of landslides, flash floods, and sudden flooding.
In Tokyo, officials issued a level 4 warning concerning flood risks from several rivers including the Kanda, Meguro, Sempukuj, Nogawa, and Sengawa Rivers. This level advises residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate from dangerous zones.
