Iran Claims Self-Defense Attacks After Oil Tanker Assault

Iranian minister claims attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain were 'self-defense' after the U.S. attacked an oil tanker heading to an Iranian port.

On Wednesday, 3 Jun 2026 GMT+7, Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, claimed that the Iranian military conducted “self-defense” strikes against locations the U.S. was authorized to use for attacking civilian shipping, violating a ceasefire agreement.

In a post on the X platform, Araghchi stated, “Any hostile action will be met with immediate and decisive retaliation. What sanctions and war could not overcome, more war will not win either.”

Araghchi posted this statement alongside a short video clip of U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio saying, “I believe our regional allies cooperate well. Some countries cooperate seriously and decisively, such as the United Arab Emirates. Kuwait is also excellent.”

According to Araghchi, early Wednesday morning Iran targeted U.S. military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, as well as a ship near the Strait of Hormuz.

Araghchi said Iran launched missiles and drones after the U.S. military used Hellfire missiles to disable an oil tanker flying the Botswana flag that was en route to Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export hub.

Iran’s Wednesday attacks included at least one strike on Kuwait International Airport, causing heavy damage, resulting in one death and 63 injuries.
