Iranian Minister Says Talks Stalled, but Trump Claims Deal Near

Iran's foreign minister revealed that talks with the U.S. have yet to make concrete progress, while Donald Trump contradicted this by saying a deal with Iran could be reached "within this weekend."

Iran's foreign minister said on Wednesday (3 Jun) that there is "no concrete progress" in negotiations to end the Middle East conflict, as new attacks from both the U.S. and Iran have increased tensions and strained the fragile ceasefire agreement.

"Communication with the Americans has not been cut off, and messages have been exchanged about the need to end aggression against Beirut, but there has been no concrete progress in the negotiation process," Abbas Araghchi, Iran's foreign minister, told Lebanon's Al Mayadeen television station.

"Any attack on Beirut will have severe consequences and will lead to a full-scale war," he said. "Our military is ready to strike Israel immediately if they attack Beirut."

Conversely, U.S. President Donald Trump took a more positive stance that contradicted Iran's statements, telling reporters at the White House that talks with Iran could yield results "within this weekend."

"I've heard the negotiations are going very well," Trump said about a possible agreement. "It could happen... within this weekend."

Additionally, Trump stated that he wants to separate negotiations over the conflict in Lebanon between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group from the talks about the U.S.-Iran war, despite Tehran insisting that the two issues are linked.

"I want to separate them. I want them to be different issues because they really are separate matters," Trump said.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpile is central to discussions with Tehran, and expressed hope that the latest talks in Washington between Israel and Lebanon could create a roadmap toward stability.
