A freight train crashed into a semi-truck in Iowa, in the eastern United States, causing one death and one person critically injured. The train suffered heavy damage, with freight cars overturned and derailed.
Officials revealed the incident occurred last Wednesday at a railway crossing where a highway intersects with tracks owned by Iowa Interstate Railroad in a rural area about 113 kilometers east of Des Moines.
Matt Maschmann, the sheriff of Poweshiek County, stated that the freight train collided with the semi-truck, resulting in one fatality on the truck and another person seriously injured who was taken to hospital.
The impact caused the train to derail, with 17 freight cars and two locomotives coming off the tracks, causing significant damage to the railway.
Images from the scene showed numerous freight containers piled up on each other with smoke rising from the tracks, while officials worked quickly to secure the area.
The Iowa State Highway Patrol reported that there was no hazardous material leakage, and investigators are examining the cause of the accident.
