Trump Criticizes Unpatriotic Lawmakers After Congress Votes to Limit War Powers

Donald Trump criticized members of the House of Representatives who voted to support measures limiting his war-making powers, including four Republican lawmakers who broke ranks, accusing them of being unpatriotic.

On Thursday, 4 Jun 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump, President of the United States, posted on Truth Social responding to House members who voted to pass the War Powers Resolution, a move aimed at restraining his authority concerning the conflict in Iran, branding those lawmakers as “unpatriotic.”

“Yesterday, in a meaningless vote, the House—which included four terrible Republicans and all the Dumocrats (a mocking term for Democrats)—voted to limit my war powers just as I was in the final stages of negotiations to end the war with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Who could be so unpatriotic?”

The vote passed 215 to 208 to approve the War Powers Resolution, which would require Trump to withdraw U.S. forces or seek congressional approval before continuing any war efforts.

However, this measure is a Concurrent Resolution, which carries no legal force and serves only as a symbolic expression of opposition to the war in Iran.

Trump’s Thursday morning post further stated, “The Democrats are driven by Trump hatred to the point of madness. They would rather see our country fail than allow me to win again, which I have done many times before. As for the four Republicans, that’s another story—they crave attention! They should be ashamed.”

This marks the fourth attempt by the House to limit Trump's war powers, while the Senate pushed a similar resolution in May, though it has yet to hold a full vote.

Although largely symbolic, Wednesday’s passage of the resolution increased pressure on the White House to seek a resolution to the war, as oil prices surged following the outbreak and public opposition to the conflict grew.

This vote also signals growing divisions within Trump’s own Republican Party, coming days after conservative lawmakers rebelled, forcing the administration to cancel plans to create a $1.8 billion fund aimed at countering the use of weapons as political tools for allies.

Tom Barrett, one of the Republican representatives who supported the resolution, affirmed, “Only Congress has the power to declare war. That is what we must protect.” When asked if he feared retaliation from Trump, he replied, “I voted according to my conscience on what I believe is right and am prepared to accept the consequences.”
