Iran Announces It Will Charge Service Fees Not Transit Fees for Ships Passing Through the Strait of Hormuz

An Iranian minister revealed that they will collect "service fees" from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, not "transit fees," and are currently drafting regulations consistent with international law.

Foreign news agencies reported on Thursday, 4 Jun 2026 GMT+7, that Kasem Qaribabadi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, disclosed plans to collect "service fees" from vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for ensuring their safety, rather than charging "transit fees."

Iran "does not intend to impose transit fees, transportation taxes, or border passage rights," Qaribabadi said in an interview with Mehr News Agency, Iran's semi-official media outlet.

He added that Iran will instead charge compensation for services jointly conducted with Oman, including navigation assistance, search and rescue operations, security and safety services, as well as environmental cleanup in the event of pollution.

Qaribabadi stated that the Strait of Hormuz "lies entirely within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman," and both governments have sovereignty over the strait "under international law and maritime law."

The Deputy Foreign Minister affirmed that the regulations being drafted will comply with international law, although he acknowledged that "these regulations may not be fully satisfactory to some countries."
