A man once praised as a "hero" for his efforts to fight a gunman in the Bondi Beach shooting late last year has been charged with assaulting his own father, though he denies the allegations.
Foreign news agencies reported on Thursday, 4 Jun 2026 GMT+7, that Ahmed Al Ahmed, the man previously hailed as a "hero" after trying to stop one of the attackers in the Bondi Beach shooting in Australia last December, has been charged with assaulting his own father.
Australian media reported that the 44-year-old man was accused of assaulting his father in March. He faces charges of common assault under domestic violence laws, as well as charges of stalking and intimidation.
However, Mr. Ahmed denies all the charges, telling ABC News that the allegations are “not true at all.” He is scheduled to appear in Bankstown Court in Sydney on 29 Jun 2026 GMT+7.
The Bondi Beach attack was the deadliest mass shooting in Australia since 1996. Police declared the incident a terrorist act targeting the Jewish community, resulting in 15 deaths and dozens injured.
CCTV footage from the shooting shows Ahmed struggling to wrestle a gun from one of the attackers, during which he was shot multiple times. Later, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited him in hospital and praised him as "the best of our country."
In addition, a fundraising campaign was launched to support Mr. Ahmed, raising more than 2.5 million Australian dollars, approximately 58.3 million Thai baht.
