U.S. Reaffirms Readiness for Unconditional Talks with North Korea Despite Kim Jong Uns Announcement to Rapidly Expand Nuclear Arsenal

The United States confirmed it remains open to unconditional talks with North Korea, emphasizing its goal of complete nuclear disarmament after Kim Jong Un inspected a new nuclear material production facility and announced a significant leap in nuclear capabilities.

On 5 June 2026 GMT+7, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State affirmed that the U.S. is still prepared for unconditional talks with North Korea and remains committed to the goal of North Korea's complete nuclear disarmament, even as the North Korean government continues to expand its nuclear and missile programs.

This statement follows reports from North Korean state media that leader Kim Jong Un visited a new nuclear material production facility earlier this week and announced plans to multiply the country's nuclear weapons capabilities dramatically. The Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim Jong Un was briefed on the progress of the nuclear material production project but did not disclose details about the facility's location or production capacity.

The U.S. stance reflects the Trump administration's efforts to revive talks with North Korea amid concerns that the North Korean government is accelerating the development of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles during a period when diplomatic negotiations with the U.S. and South Korea have been stalled for several years.

Previously, at a major Workers' Party meeting in February, North Korea reaffirmed its status as an irreversible nuclear-armed state and pledged to strengthen its nuclear deterrence capabilities under a five-year military development plan.
