Worlds First Vaccine Fully Designed by AI Launched to Combat All COVID Variants and Future Pandemics

Researchers have introduced a new type of vaccine entirely designed by AI for the first time in the world, now beginning human trials. It aims to protect against all coronavirus variants and animal viruses that might trigger future pandemics.

On 5 June 2026 GMT+7, a research team from the University of Cambridge in England announced their success in developing a new vaccine using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to design all key components. This vaccine is now being tested in humans for the first time globally, with hopes it will provide broad viral protection and reduce the risk of future pandemics.

Reports indicate that this vaccine is designed to stimulate immunity against multiple coronavirus types. It not only covers all COVID-19 variants but also includes coronaviruses found in animals that could potentially cross species to humans and cause new pandemics in the future.

Published in the academic Journal of Infection, the research notes the immune response so far is "moderate," but many experts see this as a significant milestone in vaccine development. Initial trials involving 39 volunteers mainly assessed vaccine safety, while the next phase with around 200 participants aims to better understand its effectiveness in stimulating the immune system.

Professor Jonathan Heaney, one of the lead researchers, said vaccine development often lags behind viral mutations, especially with COVID-19 and seasonal flu, which require continual formula updates. Scientists strive to stay ahead of the virus, aiming to create vaccines capable of tackling new variants even before outbreaks begin.

Professor Sal Faust, involved in some trials, stated this technology holds great potential, especially as viruses evolve rapidly. It could become a crucial tool for preparing against future pandemics. He sees AI as a game changer for vaccines by enabling faster predictions of immune responses, shortening development time, and saving more lives. The success of this AI-designed vaccine trial marks a key step toward broad, lasting immunity against diverse viruses.
