Trump Announces $700 Million Investment to Revive U.S. Coal Industry, Plans New Power Plants and Mines

President Donald Trump announced nearly $700 million in support measures for the U.S. coal industry, aiming to extend the lifespan of coal-fired power plants, open new mines, and boost exports amid efforts to revive the long-declining traditional energy sector in the country.

On 5 June 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled plans to allocate nearly $700 million, approximately 25 billion baht, to support the nation's coal industry. The initiative includes assistance for coal power plants, mine expansions, and coal exports abroad.

Speaking from the Oval Office at the White House, Trump revealed that this investment will help sustain operations at 14 coal-fired power plants and 42 coal mines nationwide, as well as open new mines, including in Alaska and West Virginia. The project is expected to support or create more than 14,000 jobs across coal mining, construction, rail systems, and maritime transport.

Under this measure, the government will invoke the Defense Production Act, a Cold War-era law granting the president authority to support industries related to national security.

The government will assist 13 coal power plants nationwide and support the construction of new coal power plants, including in Alaska and West Virginia. This will mark the first new coal-fired power plant in the U.S. since 2013.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Energy has ordered oil and natural gas power plants in Maryland and Pennsylvania to continue electricity production beyond their scheduled shutdowns, amid concerns about the country's long-term energy security.

This announcement represents the latest move by the Trump administration to revive the coal industry, which has faced decline due to stricter environmental regulations and competition from lower-cost natural gas and renewable energy sources.
