A male diver died after being bitten by a shark estimated to be about 4.5 meters long in Western Australia. This is the second fatal shark attack in the state within less than a month.
On Saturday, 6 Jun 2026 GMT+7, Australian police revealed that a 35-year-old male diver was bitten by a shark estimated to be about 4.5 meters long while spearfishing with his family off Michaelmas Island, southeast of Perth, before later dying.
Police stated that the man, whose name has not been disclosed, was attacked by the shark at approximately 11:25 a.m. local time on Saturday. He was brought aboard a boat and taken back to shore for medical assistance, but officials were unable to save his life.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) said it is assisting police and local authorities with the incident. Local media also reported that the department urged the public to immediately notify authorities if sharks are spotted in the area.
This incident occurred less than a month after Steven Mattaboni, a 38-year-old father of two, died from a 4-meter shark attack in Western Australia as well.
Australia experiences more shark attacks than any other country in the world. However, such incidents rarely result in death, and popular swimming and surfing locations typically have safety measures in place to protect people from shark attacks.
