Iran Vows to Continue Controlling Strait of Hormuz Despite New European Sanctions

An Iranian minister declared firmly that his country will continue to control the Strait of Hormuz after the European Union announced a new round of sanctions against Iran.

On Monday, 8 June 2026 GMT+7, an Iranian minister declared strongly that his country will maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's key shipping routes, while criticizing the European Union’s (EU) new sanctions targeting individuals and entities involved in controlling the strait.

Kassem Garibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, condemned the EU’s decision to impose these new sanctions as a “deceptive act.”

Earlier, senior EU foreign policy officials revealed that EU member states approved sanctions against several Iranians involved in restricting navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed since the conflict erupted on 28 February.

“It is the EU member states themselves who are among the biggest violators of the rights of the Iranian people, and the EU deliberately ignores the U.S. Navy’s blockade of Iran, which amounts to an act of war!” Garibabadi posted on the platform X.

“Iran places no value on Europe’s hypocritical and politically motivated actions this time and will continue its strategy to preserve sovereignty and exercise sovereign rights over the Strait of Hormuz.”
