Trump Accuses Iran of Shooting Down U.S. Helicopter, Vows Retaliation

Donald Trump posted a message accusing Iran of shooting down a U.S. military Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz and affirmed that there would be a response to this attack.

On 9 Jun 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump, President of the United States, posted on Truth Social accusing Iran of shooting down a U.S. AH-64 Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz near the coast of Oman during a patrol mission in the regional waters, and confirmed that a response to the attack would be necessary.

"I have just been informed by our great military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our most advanced Apache helicopters while it was patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz," Trump's post stated. "Two pilots were involved; both are safe and uninjured... However, the United States must respond to this attack."

The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) previously announced that both soldiers were safely rescued by a surface-powered drone within about two hours of the incident and are in stable condition.

This marks the first loss of an Apache helicopter since the conflict with Iran began, occurring shortly after Trump stated that the Washington administration was in the “final stretch” of reaching an agreement with the Tehran government to end the regional conflict.

However, it remains unclear at this time what form the retaliation that Donald Trump referred to will take.

Just minutes before Trump’s comments, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s chief negotiator, posted on social media: “We prefer to use diplomatic language, but we are much more fluent in other languages. If you break your promises, we will switch to the language we know best.”

“You must take responsibility for what you have caused!” Ghalibaf’s post stated.
