Mass Shooting in South Africas Johannesburg Slum Leaves 12 Dead, At Least 9 Injured

A mass shooting took place in a slum community in Johannesburg, South Africa, killing at least 12 people and injuring another 9. Police report that more than 10 gunmen stormed the area, opening fire at multiple locations before fleeing. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.

The South African Police Service released an update on the shocking incident that occurred at approximately 23:10 local time on the night of 9 June. Authorities were alerted to the shooting within the Jumper slum in the Cleveland area and promptly dispatched forces along with emergency medical teams to the scene.

Initial investigations found that a group of over 10 assailants arrived in a white Toyota Quantum van near a gas station in Cleveland. The attackers then split up and simultaneously entered the slum from both entrances, proceeding to shoot residents and community members at various locations in a brutal assault before fleeing in the same van under cover of darkness.

The violence resulted in 11 immediate deaths at the scene, including 8 men and 3 women. Additionally, one male victim died later at the hospital due to his wounds, bringing the total death toll to 12. At least 9 others suffered gunshot injuries and have been transported to various local medical facilities for treatment.

South African authorities have deployed provincial and district-level investigative teams, along with criminal intelligence units and forensic experts, to gather evidence and track down all suspects for prosecution. However, no arrests have been made so far. Police stated, "The cause and motive for this attack remain unclear and are currently under investigation," urging the public to report any information immediately via the crime hotline or the MySAPS mobile application.

Such mass shootings in slum areas are frequent occurrences in South Africa, often linked to local gang violence or personal disputes. Last year, a shooting at a bar in Johannesburg resulted in 9 fatalities.

South Africa is among the countries with the highest murder rates worldwide, averaging about 60 homicides per day. According to the Firearms Owners Association of South Africa, there are roughly 3 million legally registered firearms in the country, with an estimated equal or greater number of illegal weapons circulating, which significantly contributes to the persistent rise in violent crime.
