Gunman Opens Fire in Midland, Texas, Killing One and Injuring at Least Ten Before Found Dead in Abandoned Building

A 45-year-old man carried out a shooting in Midland, Texas, resulting in one death and at least ten injuries before being found dead inside an abandoned building. He had previously shot at police during a manhunt a few days earlier.

On 13 June 2026, a shooting occurred in Midland, Texas, USA, causing one death and at least ten injuries. Authorities spent several hours containing and managing the situation before discovering the suspect dead inside an abandoned veterinary clinic.

Midland police received a report of a gunman shooting at 8:03 a.m. local time. Upon arriving and investigating the scene, officers confronted the suspect, who fired back, forcing several officers to take cover behind patrol cars. Armored vehicles were deployed to assist.

The suspect was identified as Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, from nearby Odessa. Authorities had been pursuing him on charges of attempted murder after he fired multiple shots at Midland police during a manhunt the previous Wednesday, although no officers were injured.

Following the incident, SWAT and other agencies surrounded the area. Midland Mayor Lori Blong said authorities used robots and drones to inspect the building, later confirming the gunman was deceased. However, the cause of his death has not been disclosed.

Midland Memorial Hospital reported receiving nine injured victims, with four undergoing surgery and five in stable condition. Another injured person was transported to a hospital in Odessa. Officials have not released full details on the victims or the deceased but confirmed no police officers were harmed.

Midland previously experienced a major shooting in 2019 when a former oil company employee drove through Midland and Odessa, shooting indiscriminately, resulting in seven deaths and over twenty injuries.
