Over a Thousand Indonesian Students Rally in Jakarta to Pressure President Prabowo over Economic Decline and Rising Living Costs

Over 1,500 Indonesian students marched in protest against President Prabowo Subianto's government, demanding lower fuel and food prices while calling for the cancellation of government projects seen as wasteful, amid clashes with police.

On 13 June 2026 GMT+7, students from various Indonesian universities gathered in Jakarta to protest the economic and social policies of President Prabowo Subianto's administration amid growing concerns over a slowing economy, rising daily living expenses, and expanding public debt.

This protest, named "Heading to Bankrupt Indonesia," drew about 1,500 participants who wore yellow jackets symbolizing students before marching toward the National Monument and the Hotel Indonesia roundabout in central Jakarta.

The Student Executive Board of the University of Indonesia (BEMUI), the organizers, stated that the country’s economy is facing severe problems: the rupiah has depreciated, essential goods prices have risen, jobs have decreased, public debt has increased, and the population is suffering more and more.

Protesters presented five main demands, notably calling for reductions in fuel and food prices, and urged the government to cancel certain welfare programs viewed as costly and ineffective, such as the free school meals program—President Prabowo’s flagship policy—and the nationwide village cooperative project.

Additionally, the protesters expressed dissatisfaction with public budget spending, energy price hikes, and the growing role of the military in civilian affairs, which has been criticized as a sign of increased centralization of power under the current administration.

During the protest, clashes occurred intermittently when some demonstrators tried to breach police lines and security fences, throwing objects at officers, resulting in scuffles around the demonstration area. Organizers claimed some protesters were blocked from joining by police and military personnel, while authorities deployed about 6,000 police and soldiers to maintain order and prevent violence.

This protest represents a significant political pressure point for President Prabowo’s government, which has faced increasing criticism over economic management, budget spending, and a governance style perceived as more centralized.
