Australia Closes Beaches After Woman Seriously Injured in Shark Attack at Sydney Beach

A woman was seriously injured after being bitten by a shark at a beach in Sydney. This marks the latest shark attack incident in Australia, following several fatal shark bite cases this year.

Foreign news agencies reported, citing the New South Wales Police Department, that a woman was seriously injured after a shark bite at Coogee Beach, east of Sydney, on the morning of Saturday, 13 Jun 2026 GMT+7. This is the most recent shark attack incident in the country.

Police stated that the 35-year-old woman was assisted by bystanders who pulled her from the sea and immediately began first aid. She sustained serious injuries to her arm and leg before being urgently airlifted by helicopter to a hospital.

Following the incident, local authorities ordered the temporary closure of several beaches in the area for safety reasons.

Nikola Logan, an eyewitness, told Reuters she saw a "large pool of blood" in the water, then a "woman struggling to swim, splashing violently," followed by someone on a surf ski going out to help bring her ashore.

This incident follows the death of a male diver last week, who was bitten by a shark estimated to be 4.5 meters long at a beach southeast of Perth in Western Australia.

In May, a father of two also died after a shark attack near Perth.

Since records began in 1791, there have been nearly 1,300 reported shark attacks in Australia, with over 260 fatalities. Nonetheless, many popular swimming and surfing spots in Australia maintain various measures to prevent and monitor shark attacks.
