Trump Claims Partial Reopening of Strait of Hormuz, Full Opening Expected Friday

Donald Trump claimed that the Strait of Hormuz has partially reopened and will be fully operational by Friday, with officials currently clearing remaining naval mines.

On Monday, 15 Jun 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that the Strait of Hormuz is now partially open and will fully reopen this Friday (19 Jun), the day the U.S. and Iran are scheduled to officially sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

“They are searching for a few more naval mines, some of which have already been found, but... ships are beginning to depart,” Trump said during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the G7 summit, emphasizing, “It will be fully operational this Friday.”

Previously, the U.S. leader expressed clear dissatisfaction with European leaders’ reluctance to join the conflict with Iran. During his meeting with Macron, he hinted that the strait could reopen without relying heavily on France’s help.

“I don’t think we need much help because we have an agreement stating the strait will be open with no tolls. We had some minor disputes about this, but there will definitely be no tolls,” Trump said, adding, “However, I don’t think it’s a bad idea if a few ships from several countries are stationed here.”

Earlier, Trump indicated he might not attend the official signing ceremony with Iran, scheduled for Friday in Switzerland, stating that U.S. Vice President JD Vance “intends to carry out that duty.”
