G7 leaders have opened their summit in France amid concerns over the Middle East and the Ukraine war, while Emmanuel Macron supports the US-Iran agreement and plans to deploy naval forces to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz.
On 16 June 2026, leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) advanced industrial nations began their annual summit in Évian, southeastern France, near the Alps. Key discussion topics include the Middle East conflict, the Ukraine war, and global economic security.
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the G7 leaders before a dinner meeting to discuss major global challenges currently faced. Before the meeting, Macron met with US President Donald Trump and congratulated him on progress in the US-Iran agreement, affirming that France is ready to support the deal alongside the international community.
The French leader also announced that France is prepared to deploy the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and frigates to the Strait of Hormuz within days to support security of this vital global shipping route, following progress in negotiations between the US and Iran.
Beyond security issues, the three-day G7 summit also focuses on economic security, particularly diversifying sources of critical mineral raw materials and supply chains to mitigate risks from current geopolitical volatility impacting the global economy.
