On Tuesday, 16 June 2026, Chinese state media, citing emergency management agencies, reported that a magnitude 6.3 earthquake shook Qinghai Province in northwest China that evening, resulting in at least 1 death and 4 injuries.
The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) revealed the quake occurred at 17:06 Beijing time on Tuesday, with its epicenter in the Haixi Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
State media reported that all workers at a coal mine near the epicenter were safely evacuated. Officials are currently assessing the exact numbers of injured and deceased, as well as the extent of property damage.
Earlier, state news agency Xinhua reported that rescue teams were rushing to the scene to search for anyone possibly trapped under debris and to evaluate the risks of secondary disasters.
The China Earthquake Administration has activated its emergency response system following the strong quake, which was followed by multiple aftershocks, the strongest measuring 4.9 magnitude.
