Donald Trump confirmed he has no plans to punish those responsible for the US military's attack on an elementary school in Iran, which resulted in more than 160 deaths, emphasizing that mistakes can happen.
On 17 June 2026, Donald Trump, President of the United States, confirmed he had no plans to punish those responsible for the incident in which US forces fired missiles that struck an Iranian school on the first day of war, causing 168 deaths, mostly students.
Trump admitted, “Mistakes can happen,” when asked by reporters about the incident, but emphasized he had no intention to hold anyone in the government accountable for the attack.
“No, if it was a mistake—as you know, it is under investigation. It’s a strange question to ask in this situation about something that happened long ago. No one intended that... What about the thousands of soldiers they (Iran) blew up when opening car doors? What about the thousands of civilians killed by Iran? No, mistakes can happen.”
Trump added, “War is messy,” noting the incident is under investigation by the Department of Defense, before suggesting reporters direct further questions to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
On 28 February, US forces unintentionally attacked Shajareh Tayyiba Elementary School in Minab. Iranian government media reported at least 168 children and 14 teachers were killed, attributing the incident to outdated information about a nearby naval base, which caused the US military to misidentify the target.
Preliminary military investigations found the school attack occurred while US forces were targeting a nearby Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) military camp.
