Democratic Senators Criticize MOU as Favoring Iran, Offering No Benefit to the U.S.

Several Democratic senators have criticized the memorandum of understanding (MOU) made between the Trump administration and Iran, viewing the agreement as favorable to Iran but not beneficial to the United States.

On 17 Jun 2026 GMT+7, multiple Democratic senators criticized the new MOU reached between the U.S. and Iran over the past weekend, stating it is a deal that benefits Iran but not the United States.

On Wednesday, the U.S. officially disclosed the content of the MOU, which is scheduled for formal signing on Friday. This will mark the start of a 60-day period to negotiate the final terms of the agreement.

“I fully understand how Iran benefits from this MOU, but I honestly do not see how it will help even a single American family,” Senator Elizabeth Warren told reporters at the Capitol. “President Trump has never explained why we entered this war, but now the losses are clear.”

Meanwhile, Senator Adam Schiff of California, a Democrat, told reporters that this agreement does not benefit the United States at all.

“This seems like a great deal for Iran and a terrible deal for the United States. It is merely an agreement to negotiate further on various issues in the future, but there is hardly any incentive for Iran to actually comply with these terms,” he said.

Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, the Democratic leader on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said, “I’m glad the president is about to declare victory, because this war has been a disaster in terms of the cost borne by the American people.”

“I think people will look back and say the war we chose to start was a disaster, and today America is weaker than before the war began.”

Under the MOU, the U.S. will allow Iran to sell oil and petrochemical products, and the Tehran government could access up to $300 billion in development funds if Iran meets its nuclear program commitments in the next round of negotiations. Additionally, the U.S. will lift sanctions and unfreeze seized assets.
