Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed that the MOU between Iran and the U.S. is officially complete after both parties signed digitally, and that no signing ceremony will take place in Switzerland.
On 18 Jun 2026 GMT+7, Iran's government-run IRIB radio and television reported that Esmail Bagaei, spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, stated the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Iran and the United States has been "officially completed" following digital signatures by both parties.
"It was agreed that the MOU between Iran and the U.S. would be signed digitally," Bagaei said, adding that although there were plans for negotiation teams to travel to Geneva, no signing ceremony would occur in Switzerland, despite earlier reports that an official ceremony would be held on Friday.
"The MOU between Iran and the U.S. is now officially complete because both parties have signed it," Bagaei said, warning that violating this MOU "will come at a higher cost" now that it has been signed by the presidents of both countries.
Bagaei also said that the issues in this MOU had been previously discussed to varying degrees, and the MOU emphasizes that negotiations over the next 60 days will focus solely on nuclear matters and sanctions relief.
"The wise decision of the Islamic Republic is not to negotiate nuclear issues at this stage," IRIB quoted Bagaei as saying. "We have jointly decided to prioritize ending the war first, and we have accomplished that."
Bagaei further stated that the MOU was signed in both English and Farsi (Persian) at Iran's request to ensure transparency.
"This demonstrates the highest level of transparency in our public communication," IRIB quoted him. "If the text were only in English, subjective interpretations or translation errors could arise."
The Farsi text matches the English version accurately, and Iran considers this document "fully binding and valid," Bagaei said.
Donald Trump, U.S. President, and Vice President JD Vance have digitally signed this MOU earlier this week, while Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran's Parliament, also digitally signed the document on Iran's behalf earlier this week.
