G7 leaders issued a joint statement reaffirming their goal of complete nuclear disarmament of North Korea in accordance with United Nations resolutions, while Donald Trump promised South Korean leaders his role in promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
On 18 June 2026, the leaders of the G7 countries — the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Italy — released a joint statement following the G7 summit held in Évian-les-Bains, France, from 16 to 18 June, reaffirming their commitment to the complete nuclear disarmament of North Korea according to United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The statement expressed deep concern over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs and emphasized the importance of a free and open Indo-Pacific region governed by the rule of law. It opposed any attempts to change the status quo in the East China Sea, South China Sea, and Taiwan Strait through force or coercion, affirming that disputes should be resolved peacefully through dialogue.
Meanwhile, Oh Hyun-joo, South Korea’s Deputy National Security Advisor, revealed that during the G7 summit, U.S. President Donald Trump met several times with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and clearly expressed his intention to play a role in advancing issues on the Korean Peninsula. Trump stated he would seek ways to support peace on the Korean Peninsula and work closely with South Korean leaders on this matter.
President Lee Jae-myung congratulated Trump on the progress of the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran and underscored the importance of freedom and security for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy shipping route.
