AI Industry Shaken as Nom Shazeer, Co-Developer of Google Gemini, Joins OpenAI

The AI field was rocked when Nom Shazeer, Google's Vice President of Engineering and one of the developers of the Gemini AI model, announced his resignation to join OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT.

This career move comes amid intense competition among leading technology firms racing to develop the next generation of artificial intelligence models and to recruit top AI talent, while the company behind ChatGPT is preparing for its initial public offering (IPO).

Reports indicate that Shazeer's decision is surprising, occurring less than two years after Google invested about $2.7 billion (approximately 97 billion baht) to bring him back along with a research team from the startup Character.AI, which he once led.

Earlier in 2024, Google appointed Shazeer as one of the key overseers in developing Gemini AI; he is regarded as a crucial figure helping Gemini rapidly catch up to ChatGPT's capabilities from OpenAI.

Shazeer posted on the platform X that he is very proud of the Google team and their joint achievements and expressed excitement about joining OpenAI.

Google issued a statement expressing gratitude to Shazeer for the important work he contributed to the company over the years.

Shazeer joined Google in 2000 and was among the co-authors of the seminal 2017 research paper "Transformer," a foundational technology that sparked the new era of AI and led to the rapid rise of today's intelligent chatbots.

This team change has drawn significant attention because it coincides with OpenAI's major business expansion while technology companies worldwide compete to lead the future of AI.
