On 19 June 2026, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korea's supreme leader Kim Jong-un, issued a statement countering the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations following their summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, where they reiterated support for the complete denuclearization of North Korea in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Kim Yo-jong stated that the call for North Korea to abandon its nuclear program is an outdated idea that does not align with current realities. She affirmed that nuclear weapons are a core interest of the state, a vital tool for protecting sovereignty, and the foundation for maintaining national peace under North Korean law. She stressed that possession of nuclear weapons is an irreversible issue.
