Hong Kong has raised its rainstorm warning to the highest level after continuous heavy rain. Schools have been closed, businesses temporarily halted services, and the public has been advised to avoid high-risk areas and remain alert for severe flooding.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Black Rainstorm Warning around noon on 18 June local time, indicating that heavy rain exceeding 70 millimeters per hour is expected to continue.
This is the second time this year that Hong Kong has issued the highest-level rainstorm warning, the first having occurred on 8 June.
Hong Kong and several areas in southern China have experienced continuous heavy rainfall for several days due to the influence of the southwest monsoon and a low-pressure trough covering the region.
Authorities have also warned of strong gusty winds, with Tai O district in southwest Hong Kong recording wind speeds of approximately 80 kilometers per hour.
The warning was issued ahead of the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on Friday, coinciding with a three-day public holiday in Hong Kong, raising concerns about large numbers of people traveling.
Meanwhile, Shenzhen city in mainland China has issued a Red Rainstorm Warning and urged residents to avoid low-lying areas, flood-prone zones, and hazardous locations, warning of risks including flash floods, landslides, and other disasters.
