Irans Supreme Leader Confirms He Approved Signing MOU with the U.S.

Iran's Supreme Leader confirmed that he personally authorized the government to sign an MOU with the United States, despite having differing views, because of the commitments President Donald Trump made to him.

On Thursday, 18 Jun 2026 GMT+7, Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, stated that he was the one who approved the government’s signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the U.S., even though he held different opinions about the agreement.

In a statement broadcast on Iran's Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) network that evening, Khamenei said that U.S. President Donald Trump had “used various forms of pressure and bargaining measures in desperation to achieve this outcome.”

“In principle, I had a different view. However, considering the promises that the honorable president made to me, as the Chairman of the Supreme National Security Council, on behalf of myself and other members to protect the rights of the Iranian nation and allied groups, and his clear acceptance of responsibility for carrying out these actions, I therefore approved this agreement,” Khamenei said.

The Iranian leader further stated that Iran will “await the fulfillment of the various conditions specified” in the agreement. He added that any future face-to-face negotiations “do not imply acceptance of the enemy’s position” in any way.
