New direct talks between the US and Iran in Switzerland have been postponed after US Vice President JD Vance delayed his trip, while fighting in Lebanon remains intense despite both sides recently signing a memorandum of understanding to end the conflict.
On 20 June 2026 GMT+7, the White House announced the postponement of US Vice President JD Vance’s trip to Switzerland for new talks with Iran, citing unresolved logistical arrangements and the inability to finalize details.
This development came just one day after the US lifted its naval blockade on Iran following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to end their conflict.
However, tensions in Lebanon remain high, with the Lebanese Ministry of Health reporting that Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon last night killed at least 18 people. The Israeli military stated the operation targeted the Hezbollah group, supported by Iran, and that four Israeli soldiers were also killed.
Before the White House announcement, media close to Hezbollah reported that talks were temporarily suspended due to ongoing Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon.
Originally, both delegations were scheduled to meet at the Burglenstock resort on the mountains above Lake Lucerne to discuss technical aspects of the agreement and begin long-term talks, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
Switzerland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the talks at Burglenstock have been postponed but preparations for future meetings continue.
The US-Iran memorandum includes 14 key points such as reopening the Strait of Hormuz, guarantees that Iran will not develop nuclear weapons, a $300 billion plan to revive Iran’s economy, and lifting all types of US sanctions. The agreement sets a 60-day deadline for negotiating a full accord, extendable by mutual consent.
