Donald Trump confirmed that no tolls will be charged on the Hormuz Strait during the initial 60-day period according to the agreement and afterward. However, the U.S. might impose tolls itself if it fails to reach an agreement with Iran.
On 20 Jun 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social threatening to charge tolls to vessels passing through the Hormuz Strait if a final agreement with Iran cannot be reached, claiming the fees would be a service charge for acting as the “Guardian Angel” for the Middle East region.
“There will be no tolls in the Hormuz Strait for 60 days during the ceasefire period, and no tolls after those 60 days either, unless such tolls are imposed by the United States and for the United States in case this agreement is not completed.”
Trump’s post added that the tolls would be a “service fee as a guardian angel to countries in the Middle East, compensating for expenses incurred in the past, present, and future.”
The U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to end the war last week, but one unresolved issue remains whether the Tehran government will ultimately retain control of the strait.
Meanwhile, vessels will be allowed free passage without tolls “for 60 days only” under the agreement, while Iran and neighboring Persian Gulf countries work together to draft a new deal for the strait. This means Tehran may be permitted to charge fees in the future.
However, Trump has consistently insisted over the past week that the strait must remain open “with no tolls during the initial 60 days and afterward as well.”
