Keir Starmer Announces Resignation as UK Prime Minister and Labour Party Leader

Keir Starmer officially announced his resignation as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Labour Party after facing intense internal party pressure due to sharply declining popularity ratings. He said he is prepared to step down with dignity to allow a new party leader to be chosen by September. Andy Burnham is expected to be the frontrunner to take over, paving the way for the seventh UK Prime Minister in the last decade.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer held an important press conference today (22 June) announcing his decision to resign as Prime Minister and Labour Party leader after serving less than two years since his landslide election victory in July 2024. The process to select a new leader will be completed before Parliament reconvenes in September.

Starmer left 10 Downing Street alongside his wife amid cheers and applause from staff. He expressed deep emotion, saying that entering this path two years ago was the proudest moment of his life, and that his original intention in politics was to improve the lives of millions of people.

Before announcing his resignation, Starmer reflected on revitalizing the Labour Party, saying he inherited a party "bankrupt politically, financially, and morally," and was repeatedly told the party was finished. However, he proved them wrong by eradicating toxic anti-Semitism within the party and restoring confidence in the economy, national defense, and security, ultimately leading the party back to government.

However, after months of mounting internal pressure and the lowest approval ratings among recent UK leaders, Starmer said:

"The question our party is currently asking is whether I remain the best person to lead the fight in the next general election. I have heard the answer from our party's members of Parliament, and I accept it willingly and with honor. Every decision I have made has been motivated solely by my love for this country."

Starmer revealed he informed King Charles III by phone this morning to formally report his decision. He requested the Labour Party's National Executive Committee to set a timeline for the leadership election, which will open for nominations on 9 July and conclude during the summer parliamentary recess, so a new leader is in place by September. Meanwhile, he will continue as acting Prime Minister and fully support his successor.

At the end of his statement, Starmer struggled to hold back tears as he thanked colleagues and said that after leaving the "largest office in the country," he will return to what he called the "most important job of my life": being a good husband to his wife, "Vick," who has been his pillar throughout, and a good father to their children, before embracing his wife and walking back into the official residence.

Starmer's situation worsened after Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Manchester known for his communication skills, decisively won a parliamentary by-election last Friday, defeating Reform UK candidate Nigel Farage, who had led national polls for over a year. This victory gave Labour MPs hope that Burnham could rescue the party's fortunes.

If the transition completes, the new leader will become the seventh UK Prime Minister since the Brexit referendum ten years ago, highlighting the highest political instability in nearly two centuries, as voters express dissatisfaction with failures in improving living standards, public services, and managing illegal immigration.

However, analysts from Citigroup warn that the new Prime Minister will face extremely fragile fiscal constraints due to the country's high debt burden and the highest borrowing costs among G7 nations, leaving limited tools for national development amid ongoing public frustration over the unresolved cost of living crisis.
