U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance confirmed that Donald Trump's criticism of Iran's leader did not cause the Sunday talks to fail. He also disclosed that Iran has agreed to allow nuclear inspectors from the IAEA into the country.
On Monday, 22 Jun 2026 GMT+7, J.D. Vance praised what he called a "very good" day of talks between the U.S. and Iran on Sunday, emphasizing four key issues to be addressed in technical negotiations set to occur within the next few days.
"First, we want to create a mechanism to maintain openness in the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently open," Vance told reporters at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland, where the talks took place. "We want to ensure that we have established an effective coordination mechanism" for mine clearance operations and trade restoration.
The negotiation team is also working to create a "similar mechanism" aimed at "reducing conflict to achieve a regional ceasefire," targeting prevention of broad military escalation in the region, especially in Lebanon, which has become a strategic focal point in these talks.
Additionally, Vance stated that Iran agreed to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) into the country, which he described as progress that "we as Americans should be very excited about."
"This is a major achievement for the American people and the first step toward permanent nuclear disarmament—or permanently ending Iran’s nuclear weapons program—which is truly what we want to accomplish," he said.
Lastly, Vance said the negotiation team has established a process to continue detailed technical discussions as the lead negotiators prepare to depart Switzerland today.
"The final agreement is like the house itself," Vance said. "We have laid the foundation now—even if the house is not yet built, we have successfully established a foundation that leads to a good outcome for the American people."
Vance also denied reports that talks collapsed due to President Donald Trump criticizing Iran's president, stating, "What we told Iran yesterday was that when you begin with derogatory remarks, you should not expect the President of the United States not to respond or to correct misunderstandings."
Regarding the status of talks between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, Vance said, "That matter is still ongoing, but what we have done is to set an actual framework to ensure the situation does not escalate beyond control in the future."
On unlocking Iran’s frozen assets, the U.S. Vice President emphasized, "We want to ensure that if Iran’s assets are ever unlocked, we can guarantee that the funds—which belong to Iran—are used to help the Iranian people, not to support terrorism."
Vance added that the U.S. and Qatar will have approval authority over this process. "The money will be used to buy American soybeans, corn, and wheat for the benefit of the Iranian people," he concluded, calling this a "classic Trump-style deal."
